6 Keys To Prove You're A Leader

Many people get some sort of position of leadership every year. While nearly all of these individuals have the best of intentions, very few transform and/ or develop into the highest quality, true leaders. Unfortunately, most individuals are either unwilling/ unprepared, or unable to identify and recognize what goes into this process, so they often believe they are being good leaders, while they may not actually be such. Therefore, after more than three decades of working with, identifying, qualifying, training, developing and consulting to well over a thousand individuals in some position, I have come to the belief that there must be a way that a well - intentioned person, can determine if they are not only doing a good job, but also whether they are really a leader. The following are what I consider six keys or essentials.

1) Lead by example: It is important to understand that potential followers will pay you little heed if they observe what they consider any conflict between your words/ rhetoric, and your actions. They look to those who lead to show them the way, and demonstrate how important something is, by always being willing to do, first, what they are asking of others.

2) Have a well - considered plan: Good things rarely occur by accident. If you want something to happen, you must thoroughly plan for it. The best leaders have always been those who effectively and thoroughly/ consistently plan to lead. Only when you plan well, can you transform a mere dream to an achievable, demonstrable goal, that will positively motivate others.

3) Articulate your plan clearly and transparently: You can't be a secret leader. Step forward, spell it out to others, explain why it is so important, what it addresses and how, and listen effectively to questions and concerns, always answering them fully and in detail.

4) Motivate others: If no one else cares, or is willing to follow you, how can you possibly serve as a leader? Leading encompasses effectively motivating and inspiring others to believe, follow, and get more involved, and care more deeply.

5) Demonstrable impact: Avoid empty rhetoric, or making promises that you will probably not keep. Rather, clearly show others why the plan is important, and how. Explain why you feel so deeply about it, and demonstrate to the satisfaction of others, precisely how you will make their experience more important, relevant and sustainable, and why you need their involvement, and how they can help, both he group, as well as their own priorities and concerns.

6) Sustainable: How long - lasting is your plan? Will it enhance the potential for continued relevance and sustainability of the organization?

Don't merely hold a leadership position and think it means you are leading. Rather, follow and observe these six keys, and prove you deserve to be considered a leader,
